8 SURPRISING REASONS WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE A HOBBY
This latest blog post on Mister Weekender kick starts a new series - Life Hacks. I'll be discussing many of life's hacks, from travel to technology, creativity to architecture, adventure to reading, interiors to health. I hope you enjoy reading Mister Weekender Life Hacks as much as I love researching and writing them! To launch the first Life Hack on Mister Weekender, I am going to talk about hobbies. Yes! Travel might be my main jam but that doesn’t mean I don’t have other hobbies. I need to keep my creative juices flowing when I am not on the road exploring a new destination or travel writing from home. For me, it’s hiking or getting crafty ! Say the words Eckersley’s, Spotlight, Bunnings and Ikea, and my heart starts to palpitate. These are my favourite places to visit when I have some time at home. So why is it important to have a hobby? Here are my top eight reasons why you should own this life hack:
HOBBIES ARE FUN Hobbies are a lot of fun! They're not supposed to be serious or feel like a chore. They give you time away from everyday life, help expand your creativity and put a smile on your face.
HOBBIES ARE IMPORTANT It’s important to do something for yourself, and outside of work, family and friends. I've found when I do something for myself, I am always so happy and feeling uber creative. My most cherished hobby is hiking. Whenever I feel like I am in a creative rut, I always go happy and it never ceases to amaze me how much energy I have, and how happy I am when I get back.
HOBBIES INTRODUCE US TO LIKEMINDED PEOPLE Ever felt like you haven't found your tribe? This is why hobbies are amazing! Just because your partner or friends doesn't like your hobby, doesn't mean no one else will. Having a hobby is a great way to meet likeminded people and make new friends who like the same things as you.
HOBBIES REDUCE STRESS There is something super cathartic about having a hobby, it reduces stress levels and make us happy. Usually when we are taking part in a hobby, whether it's painting, surfing or hiking, we are taken to a place of fun and relaxation. So it's inevitable we'll start feeling more calm and less stressed!
HOBBIES GET US TO DO WHAT WE LOVE One of my most visited sections on Mister Weekender is the Do What You Love section in my main menu, see above! Here I talk about doing what you love and how it can help with your creativity, work life balance, productivity, success and home life. Hobbies are at the very central to these blog posts. By doing what you love, it doesn't feel like a job or a chore. Hurrah!
HOBBIES MAKE US PASSIONATE Ever since I discovered my love of hiking, I certainly now have a whole new level of passion for hiking. It makes me feel fresh and full of passion for life, nature and adventure. Does your hobby make you feel passionate about making ceramics, sewing or shaping surfboards? It should!
HOBBIES GIVES US MORE TO TALK ABOUT What I love about hobbies the most is that it gives us something else to talk about other than work. And who knows, maybe one day your hobby will turn into a career - like this blog did!
HOBBIES MAKES US INTERESTING I don't know about you, but back when I was working 9 to 5 in PR I never talked about work when I get home. Borrring. But I always talked about travel, and knew it enriched my experiences and made me more interesting. Can you say the same?
A few years back, Jayne Min of uber fashion blog Stop It Right Now created designer skateboards using Celine’s culture changing print in 2011. She sold a few limited edition decks and I remember umming and ahhhing for ages, but didn’t commit because I was living in London and saving to travel. I’ve been kicking myself since.
Crafting my own decks using paint has been a project I’ve always wanted to accomplish. So a little while ago I sourced some decks, brushes, acrylic paint and got crafty. I used Pinterest as a source of inspiration for patterns and chose to mix vibrant colours with white to create pastels for the decks. Needless to say I am so happy at how good they turned out!
Update: After a few months I ended up painting over the blue, yellow and pink with grey, white and green instead. And I love them even more!
