CUTLERY AT THE READY: SARDINE RESTAURANT IN SEMINYAK, BALI
If there is one thing the Balinese people do well, it's food. You are certainly spoilt for choice in Seminyak no matter what your budget is. Another amazing restaurant I went to in Bali was Sardine. Just down the road from Metis (see more here), Sardine is a charming restaurant housed in a striking bamboo structure overlooking endless rice paddies. The working rice fields at Sardine are tended daily by the local farmers as is the gorgeous live bamboo forrest and lily ponds which surround the rice fields. Bookings are not essential during the week, but there are lots of tourists staying in Seminyak at any time during the week and weekends so I would at least book in advance; two days should be enough. As with Metis, the best way to get to Sardine is by taxi. As with most restaurants in Bali, security is tight on arrival. Whilst you feel somewhat safe with the security presence, it does remind you of the Bali bombings which occurred in Kuta in in 2002. Walking through the entrance, you immediately walk past the restaurant and bar to your right and as you make your way down the path, the rice fields materialise in front of you like nothing you've ever seen before.
My friend Jess from Tuula Vintage was only at Sardine a couple of months ago and it's amazing to see how dramatically different the scenery was when she was at Sardine; the rice fields had been harvested and grouped into bunches and dried out. So it was a nice surprise to see so much green! Once again, we were given the best table at the restaurant. I began thinking it might have been because we were staying at the Royal Beach Hotel and they helped us make a few bookings over the course of our holiday. With another gorgeous menu to study, I ended up choosing the following:
Starter: Kemiri Clams, steamed in coconut milk, lemongrass and kaffir lime
Main: Pan Seared Diver Scallops, mushroom ravioli, parsley truffle emulsion, oven cured tomato and herb relish
And shock horror, no dessert! There is so much eating done in Bali I ended up having to choose between a Starter or Dessert at dinner. The Starter won hands down at Sardine, for obvious reasons.
