Staycationing is something that is becoming more and more appealing to me these days. Between planning our wedding, making final selections whilst our house is being built and saving for our honeymoon to Europe (!), my focus is turning to trips in my own backyard. Not sure what a staycation even is? It’s a getaway close to home so you don’t have to jump on a flight; it’s a destination within a few hours’ drive from where you live.

From day one of this blog, I have been a huge fan of advocating weekend adventures in our own backyards. After recently blogging about the benefits of taking a staycation, the team at TripAdvisor asked me create a detailed guide to show you how to properly plan your next staycation using the free TripAdvisor app. Enjoy!

Proximity is key when planning your next staycation. The first thing you need to decide is where to go. Even though we know our own backyards like the back of our hands, I’ve found the TripAdvisor app helps discover those places, stays and experiences I never even knew existed, especially when you’re on the move. I can also check out the latest reviews from travellers, who are just like me, to get a better understanding of the best things to see and do whilst planning. The next thing you need to do is find somewhere to stay. Once you’ve done this, I highly recommend using the app to find things to see and do, as well as restaurants to dine at. But more on this later in the guide.

Now that you know where you’re going to take your staycation, and you’ve found somewhere to stay, and you’ve selected the things you want to see and do using the TripAdvisor app, it’s time to book! This part is simple - select your dates and off you go. The app compares prices from more than 200 sites to help you find the lowest hotel rates. You can literally book your whole trip on the app; it’s the ultimate travel companion because it is so easy. Also, all your bookings are saved in the app, so you don’t have to worry about printing confirmations and losing these important yet impractical pieces of paper on your travels - it’s all on your phone.

I live on the Sunshine Coast in Australia, and if you are looking to stay here for your next staycation, there are a quite a few things to see and do in the area. These are all easily bookable from your TripAdvisor app and you can, of course, also write reviews straight from the app and post a photo or two so you’re paying it forward for other travellers so they can use your experience and reviews to guide their own plans.

If you want to keep your trip flexible, you can also use the Near Me Now section within the app to find local places to eat so you don’t have to get in your car because walking to a restaurant from your hotel is totally the best thing ever. With so much to choose from on the Sunshine Coast, I thought I would share two of my favourite things to see and do.

The first is to do a 4WD tour between Noosa and Rainbow Beach. You get picked up in Noosa and driven over to Rainbow Beach, where you’ll drive up 70 Mile Beach with your very own experienced driver. It certainly takes the stress away from figuring out how to drive on sand yourself! The second is to go horse riding on Rainbow Beach. Yup, you read correctly. You can go horse riding on Rainbow Beach. And it’s simply breathtaking. Here are a few other things to see and do around Noosa and the Gold Coast:

·      Enjoy a quintessential Australian lunch at the Rainbow Beach SLSC

·      Experience the best burgers in Australia at Betty’s Burgers on Hastings Street in Noosa

·      Coming from the Gold Coast? Take a day trip to the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Heads. There’s a similar tour for those who live in Brisbane

·      Grab some finger licking grub from Corbins in Maroochydore
