HOW TO ACHIEVE WORK LIFE BALANCE IN SIX EASY STEPS
How to achieve work life balance – the holy grail! I'd really love to meet the person who decided that the majority of us have to work five days a week with only two day left for adventure and fun. What were they thinking! That is not work life balance, it's far from it. Working four days a week with three days left for adventure and fun is a much closer step to work life balance, don't you think?
When I decided to stop working full time, it literally changed my world. I now work three to four days a week as a social media manager and the remaining days are dedicated to Mister Weekender. It's not easy. It's a lot of hard work. If anything I am working a lot harder now than when I did have a full time job. But I love what I do so it doesn't feel like work.
So how do we achieve work life balance? It’s actually a lot easier than it sounds, but it will take some changed thinking.
DRAW A LINE The hero of achieving work life balance is knowing when to draw a line under things. You must decide what is important – and what’s not. Easier said than done? Well, yes. You need to accept that you can’t do it or have it all and you need to ask yourself what’s most important thing to you. An example – Monday to Friday are for work. Saturday is for family and friends. Sunday is for hobbies. No work on weekends. So ask yourself what’s important to you and draw a line underneath it.
BE HAPPY Happy people are busy but they don’t feel rushed. That’s the key to work life balance. So dedicate time to doing what makes you happy. For me, it’s travelling. For you, it could be surfing, creating scrap books, writing in your journal, having brunch every weekend with friends – these are non-negotiable towards happiness.
CONCENTRATE ON ONE THING AT A TIME Forget multitasking. It only leads to the temptations of procrastination and distraction. Plus it leads to not completing tasks to their full potential. Instead devote your time to the task at hand.
EMBRACE SWITCHING OFF When you have work life balance you can do one thing really well – and that’s switching off. When you’re at work, switch off from everything else and focus on work. The same applies for your time outside of work. When you’re spending time on the weekend with family and friends, don’t look at work emails, don’t read the news. In a nut shell, don’t distract yourself. Focus on what’s in front of you and embrace switching off.
BUY AN ALARM CLOCK To resist checking emails or social platforms first thing in the morning, place your mobile phone outside your bedroom and buy an alarm clock. It will change your life!
SELF AWARENESS IF CRUCIAL To enjoy work life balance, you need to appreciate the value of how fast you do things. Sometimes you’ll be completely under the pump. Other times you’ll have all the time in the world. So ensure you have self-awareness as this will ensure you appreciate the journey as much as the destination.
