First it was the coffee detox, then it was the juice detox and now it’s the digital detox. What is the world coming to…? But in all seriousness, it’s something I have found myself doing more and more of lately – taking a break from those techie things around me. You know, the computer, the phone, the Instagram and the Snapchat. And I am loving it. So I thought I would share a few tricks I’ve learned along the way to help you do your own digital detox, successfully. SET A GOAL There is not point going through a digital detox, whether it’s for a weekend, a week or a lifetime, unless you have put some goals in place. Depending on your relationship with all things techie, each detox goal will be different for everyone. Is your detox for your phone only? Are you trying to cut down the time you spend on your iPad before you hit the pillow? Whatever it is, write it down and put this somewhere you can see every single day, because we believe in the powers of manifesting.

GO OLD SCHOOL Buy an alarm clock and put your phone in the kitchen at night, so you can sleep without having a phone close to your head (this can’t be good for us) and to stop you from checking your emails and texts in the middle of the night. C’mon, we’re alllll guilty of this. And invest in the age old wristwatch to stop you from checking your phone every ten minutes. It’s amazing how much time you will save!

TURN OFF DISTRACTIONS Jase was driving us somewhere the other day and I noticed his phone kept buzzing; they were notification for every new email he receives and I was horrified. So I promptly switched these notifications off for him and he’s now checking his phone a lot less lately – win win. Because of this, my best advice is to turn off distractions by switching off the notifications for your emails and social media. Also, throw your phones into a bowl when you get home at the end of the day, and don’t look at them again until after dinner. Spend quality time with your family and friends, and focus on cooking a delicious dinner. Yum!

ENJOY YOUR FREE TIME You’ll notice really quickly how much free time you have when you do a digital detox, but don’t freak out when you go to have a look at your phone and you remember it’s in a bowl far, far away from you. Choose to spend your time more wisely – play Scrabble, go for a walk, or read. Even if it’s 30 minutes a night, by the end of the week you have free’d up almost four hours of time – incredible!

SLEEP BETTER Before you hit the pillow – don’t check your phone. In fact, leave it in the kitchen and read a book. There is lots of research about the brightness of mobile devices sending our sleeping brains into a spin and as a result, we have lighter sleeps because of it. So invest in that alarm clock or keep your wristwatch on the beside table instead of your phone. You’ll thank me for it, trust me.

GET OUTDOORS Without a doubt, the best way to go on a digital detox successfully is to leave your phone at home and enjoy the outdoors! Pack a panic and spend the day at the beach with your friends (sans phone), or enjoy a long run without headphones (you can do it) or go hiking with friends and enjoy the pleasures of their company and funny chats.
