If you’ve been following my adventures on Instagram lately, then you’ll know I recently returned from a blissful trip to Thailand. I travelled around the island and visited Bangkok, Phuket and Khao Lak. I stayed at Centara Seaview Resort in Khao Lak for a few days of blissful relaxation. I was very lucky to stay in one of the beachfront villas, where I even had my own pool and private outdoor shower. Basically it was the villa of my dreams and I wish I had my better half to share it with, wink wink!

As many of you know, Thailand was hit very badly by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. As well as Phuket and Phi Phi, Khao Lak was one of the spots terribly affected. Quite a scary thought to think the villa I was staying in was literally washed away.

However Centara Seaview Resort, along with the local community and government, has implemented a tsunami beacon on the beach front. It gives locals and tourists a 30 minute warning of an oncoming tsunami, which gives the essential time needed to get to safety. For travellers thinking of visiting the area, do not be put off my a tsunami. Whilst the tragedy is still very much prominent in the hearts of the locals, I’ve never felt safer.

I also want to use this opportunity to introduce you to Hands Across The Water, a charity set up by former police forensic specialist Peter Baines. Peter worked with the Boxing Day tsunami disaster victim identification team in 2004 and was deeply touched by the number of local children left homeless and alone by the natural disaster.

Hands Across the Water is an Australian charity that gives at-risk Thai children and their communities a helping hand. Their projects are tailored to meet local communities’ needs – for the long term. If you are lucky to visit Khao Lak and stay at Centera Seaview, ask the staff to coordinate a visit to Hands Across The Water – you’ll be able to meet some of the kids the charity it helping.
