There are many benefits to switching off technology in our daily lives when going on a weekender or holiday, however with mobile phones, Wi-Fi access and social media platforms demanding our attention, how do we actually disconnect? That’s the easy part. Simply switch everything off. That’s exactly what I did a couple of weeks ago when I went to stay at Bluey’s Retreat, south of Forster in NSW Australia. Admittedly the ‘switching off’ part was purely accidental as my mobile provider did not offer mobile or Internet reception to the region. However, it was nonetheless blissful to truly indulge in my surroundings without checking up on Instagram.

Bluey’s Retreat is approximately a three-hour drive north of Sydney. A short walk from the beach, the luxury accommodation overlooking a spectacular native forest is the perfect weekender getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Located in the beautiful surrounds of Boomerang Beach and Elizabeth Beach, I stayed in a quiet self catered two bedroom, two bathroom studio which came with a large fully equipped kitchen, laundry and a BBQ on the back verandah overlooking a lush tropical forest.

If you want spend your time relaxing at the retreat, there is a pool, heated spa, tennis court, clubhouse with a pool table and an award-winning restaurant, The Kingfisher, to help you unwind during your stay.

If you want explore the region there are many activities to partake in, including surf lessons or you can simply hook a line and catch a fish at many of the surrounding beaches. There are local boat tours for whale or dolphin watching, you can take a sunset walk to the lighthouse, spend your pocket money supporting the local growers and craft markets, indulge at one of the many local vineyards in the Hunter Region or visit the Green Cathedral at Tiona.

The famous surf spot Seal Rocks is also just a short drive away, and well worth a visit. The road to Seal Rocks is mostly gravel so make sure you drive slowly if you don’t have a 4WD vehicle.
