MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IN BALI: METIS, SEMINYAK
So it's Day 3 in Bali and I already know that by the time I leave, I wouldn't have even scratched the surface of this island paradise. There is just so much to see and discover! No wonder Australians keep coming back; no holiday to Bali is ever the same. On my first day in Bali I made the decision to spend the day relaxing and swimming by the pool. This was mostly due to the fact that after reviewing the weather forecast there is quite a bit of tropical rain expected this week so whist the sun was out I thought I'd better make the most of it. I am so accustomed to going on weekenders, where I cram as much in as possible, that on this first day I found myself quite restless and feeling guilty for not leaving the hotel to explore. My friends know I move a million miles per hour but even I had to force myself to stop, relax and unwind.
After luxuriating by the pool all day, I was very much looking forward to dinner. Before I left for Bali, I was given a stack of recommendations. One of those was to have dinner at Metis in Seminyak. Regarded as the best restaurant in Bali, bookings are required months in advance.
The best way to get to Metis is by cab. BlueBird taxi's are regarded as the safest taxi service in Bali but there are a lot of cars who look like they're a BlueBird taxi, however, they are in fact not. Before you jump in a taxi, check that it has a BlueBird vehicle number, the BlueBird contact number is on the side of the car and that the meter in the vehicle is working. Taxi's here are ridiculously cheap. It only cost us $3 to travel from our hotel, The Royal Beach in Seminyak, to Metis and that was about a 15 minute journey. If you don't manage to find a BlueBird taxi, many other drivers charge a base rate of Rp. 50,000 which is about $5AUD.
Upon arrival, security is tight and the entrance is absolutely beautiful. Walking through the restaurant, your senses are immediately assaulted with the jaw dropping view of large lotus ponds, an offering temple and rice fields. Having booked over a month ago no doubt ensured we were seated at one of the best tables at the restaurant. With a large menu to choose from including their famous foie gras, and after a very long time studying the menu I ended up choosing the following:
Starter: Bambu lobster ravioli with Japanese seaweed and white truffle beurre blanc Rp. 185,000
Main: Trio of fish 'a la Plancha' which consisted of 1) Tasmanian salmon with marscapone fregola, braised fennel, pistachio and dill lemon sauce, 2) Coral trout with sugar snap peas, baked butternut pumpkin, saffron and lemon velouté, and 3) Yello fin tuna, vegetables ratatouille, basil pesto and lemon beurre blanc Rp. 195,000
Dessert: Fresh coconut soufflé, coconut jelly, lemongrass syrup and lime sorbet Rp. 78,000
I am not a fine dining photographer, plus the light was very dim and romantic. So instead of taking photos of what I ordered, I simply sat back, relaxed and enjoyed my meal. Sorry!
